The existing family bathroom at first level and adjacent nursery to the front were wholly unsuitable, as the bathroom was too small to accommodate a bath, and the nursery was too small to allow for future conversion to a bedroom. The staircase to the attic level also posed a number of problems; it compromised access to a bedroom at first level, and the pitch of the staircase was dangerously steep, therefore limiting access.
The new proposals allow for two extended sections:
a) a pop-out extension to the front / side of the existing dwelling to provide a new family bathroom, and adequately sized third bedroom to the front of the property.
b) an extension to the rear of the property to allow for a reconfigured winding staircase to the attic level, and a new corridor at first floor level allowing for ample access to both existing bedrooms. Furthermore, the extension to the rear allows for a cranked window system to be installed; by continuing the eaves level of the existing rear roof, the existing bedrooms may be extended in area, allowing for greater built-in storage, improved daylight throughout with minimal impact to the existing layouts / neighbouring properties.
While the area of the proposed extension is extremely small, it contributes greatly to the improved rationalisation of the internal plan layout, and creates a much more user friendly family home.

PROJECT DETAILS
The existing property was a circa 2002 detached two storey dwelling with converted attic. The house was originally constructed as a side garden development, which is reflected internally with some unusual geometries throughout. The existing house comprises of living, downstairs bathroom and playroom at ground level with a single storey kitchen / dining area to the rear, family bathroom, nursery and two bedrooms at first level, with a converted attic space at the uppermost level. The client brief for this project was to rationalise the internal plan layout, create a functional family bathroom with adequate room for a bath, and also to improve storage areas in the existing bedrooms. The final challenge was to rationalise access to the attic room; currently an open tread staircase with a pitch of almost 60 degrees, which was unsafe for unsupervised use with young children.
