PROJECT DETAILS

An existing end-of-terrace house in Drumcondra presented a beautiful interior, with original detailing from the early 20th century.

The existing layout at ground level presented a number of challenges to modern life, namely the distinct lack of space within the main kitchen area, to the rear of the site.  The existing lean to garage abutting the side gable of the dwelling was largely unused, and presented an ideal opportunity to expand the kitchen area, to form a comfortable kitchen / dining area, creating a utility area within the former garage, whilst also retaining a separate entrance to the rear garden.

The extension, while small in scale, presented a structural challenge of removing a large brick chimney at ground level, whilst retaining it above at first floor level.

A recessed brick detail was exposed on the front elevation on the extension section, with brickwork sourced to match the existing original brickwork on the main house.  This was sourced in an imperial brick dimension, with the brick coursing tying in un-noticed. To the rear, a black brick was introduced, delineating the junction between the main house and extension.

The joinery detailing was another important aspect of the project, with new Iroko joinery details produced by a specialist local joiner for the extension elements.  A large picture window to the rear greatly enhances light levels within the newly extended kitchen.  A large (currently) blank wall presents a canvas for the client to display her extensive ceramics collection.
